The Telluride Team Takes to the Warehouse

The resounding belief that no one should suffer from hunger finds its embodiment in Food Gatherers, the food bank and food rescue program serving Washtenaw County. Their mission extends far beyond providing meals; they are the lead agency in the county's quest to alleviate hunger.

For nearly ten years, MBTA house members have been involved with Food Gatherers in their battle against food insecurity. Through free and low-cost food, deliveries, and training, Food Gatherers supports a network of over 140 community partners. Their approach is holistic, encompassing not only immediate food distribution but also empowering programs like the Food Gatherers Community Kitchen, the Summer Food Service Program, and the Healthy School Pantry Program. This dedication extends to collaborations with schools, universities, and healthcare providers, addressing service gaps and advocating for equitable food systems. You can learn more about their work on their website linked here.

Last Saturday house members Munira, Abdul, Debora, Zoey, Zuzanna and Riley kicked off the first house service activity of the fall semester at the Food Gatherers warehouse. The Telluride Team was tasked with sorting the food and also gaining insight into the extensive network addressing local food insecurity. House members were treated to enlightening tours of both the food bank and the warehouse, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the heart of the operation. During their shift, the Telluride Team saved over 300 tons of food.
